Rick Steves Thinks This European Country Is Underrated And Unexpectedly Charming

When planning a trip to Europe, it's tempting to just think of the big countries. And while the more famous nations certainly have plenty to offer — such as these gorgeous French wine regions or Spain's wealth of sparkling clean beaches — the smaller, more under-the-radar ones are also very much worth your consideration. Instead of just heading to Germany, why not also check out its northern neighbor Denmark? Consider green and gorgeous Wales if you're in the U.K. Pop into tiny Liechtenstein when you're visiting Switzerland, and if you're cruising through the Adriatic, don't miss Albania, an up-and-coming destination that is like Greece without the crowds.

When it comes to travel guru Rick Steves' thoughts on what smaller European country should be on your itinerary, the choice is clear: Slovenia. Not to be confused with nearby Slovakia (another place well worth checking out), Slovenia is sandwiched between Italy, Austria, Croatia, and Hungary and has soaked up many of the best aspects of German, Italian, and Slavic cultures. "Tiny, overlooked Slovenia is one of Europe's most unexpectedly charming destinations," Steves wrote on his website. "Though it's just a quick trip away from the tourist throngs in Croatia, Venice, Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna, Slovenia has stayed mostly off the tourist track — making it a handy detour for in-the-know travelers."

Roam the streets of Slovenia's magical capital

Slovenia is named for the Slovenes, a South Slavic people that today make up over 83% of the population. Once part of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia gained its independence in 1991. Today, it is a prosperous, democratic country that boasts rich history, fairy-tale architecture, a unique culture, and jaw-dropping natural scenery.

Most visitors to Slovenia start in the compact but alluring capital, Ljubljana. Built around the lazy flow of the Ljubljanica River, Ljubljana is an extraordinarily clean city with the biggest car-free zone in Europe, making it extremely walkable. Stroll along the river and admire the picturesque bridges spanning its flow before sitting down for a drink at one of the many cafes lining its banks. The next stop is Ljubljana Castle, which stands on a hill over the city center like a stone guardian and offers sweeping views of the impressive surroundings. For something more contemporary, spend an hour or so at the Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana, which features works by local artists and acts as a kind of window into just what makes the country tick. While you're there, pop across the street to Tivoli Park. This 200-year-old green space acts as the lungs of the city and is the perfect place to unwind and empty your mind.

It should come as no surprise that the capital has an exciting food scene, so when it comes time to eat, sit down for some traditional fare at Slovenska hiša Ljubljančanka, which dials in local flavors with terrific ambiance. Georgie Bistro features creative, freshly sourced dishes paired with Slovenian organic wines, Druga Violina features old-style Slovenian comfort food (think beef soup and sausages), and Veganika is the city's top choice for meat-free dining.

Dive into the beauty and natural splendor of Slovenia

Slovenia may be small, but it packs a punch when it comes to outdoor scenery. The country's crown jewel in this regard is Lake Bled. This emerald freshwater body is not only eye pleasing in its own right, but it also features an idyllic little church on an island in the middle of the lake, with the snowcapped Julian Alps acting as the backdrop. Perched on a steep promontory looking down on the action is Bled Castle, an 11th-century fortress that is the oldest of its kind in Slovenia.

While you're in the area, head to nearby Vintgar Gorge or take a dip in Lake Bohinj —the largest natural lake in the country. Make sure to also visit the picture-perfect Soča Valley, which — aside from quaint Alpine villages — is known for its brilliant blue waters. Hiking enthusiasts will find no shortage of opportunities in Triglav National Park. This reserve features some of Europe's best trekking routes, including the Juliana Trail, a 166-mile-long distance circuit hike that is a bucket-lister for many. And if you're exploring Slovenia's natural wonders, you're almost required to spelunk the vast caverns that make up the Škocjan Caves. This UNESCO World Heritage site features an underwater river and canyon and is best done as part of a guided tour.

Wherever you choose to visit in Slovenia, you're unlikely to be disappointed. "Be warned," Rick Steves wrote. "Everyone I've met who's visited Slovenia wishes they'd allotted more time for this endearing, underrated land." Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is conveniently situated near the capital and easy to fly into, with buses available to take you to the city center. For another one of Europe's hidden gems, check out Luxembourg, a gorgeous country where public transportation is free.
