Perhaps the most important decision you will make when planning your European vacation is where you will rest your head. Having an enjoyable stay can directly impact the rest of your trip. And while large chain hotels and Airbnb offer a range of options, travel expert Rick Steves has plenty of reasons why you should consider staying at a bed-and-breakfast on your next trip.

The most obvious difference between a stay at a B&B versus a traditional hotel or Airbnb is the personal touch. Owners of bed and breakfasts often greet their guests, show them to their accommodations, and even offer sweet treats or other refreshments. As Steves writes on his website, staying in one of these private accommodations is like having your own temporary mother with you while you travel.

The stay also means less work in figuring out your breakfast plans. Breakfast is usually included and often cooked on site by the owner. So, if you want to avoid noisy hotel lobbies or the struggle of roaming the busy streets to find your morning cup of coffee, a B&B could be the perfect choice. Different B&Bs offer different amenities, of course, so it's best to do a little research before booking. The good news is European B&Bs are often grouped together, particularly in British and Irish destinations, so "find one, and you've found four or five more," Steves says.

Admittedly, many B&Bs don't have the upscale accommodations of large hotel chains. In-room telephones or room service may not be an option, for example. But guests will instead have a chance to see the local culture from a new perspective, Rick Steves says on his blog. Owners of these establishments are members of their communities and are often more than willing to offer suggestions for curious sightseers, visitors, and history buffs.

Remember, a bed-and-breakfast is not the same thing as an Airbnb, which Steves suggests you may want to avoid anyway. A B&B is personal, and you are often staying in or near the host's permanent residence. This means more personal consideration of your needs, as well as impeccable attention to detail. Steves says staying in one of these accommodations is also a great way to avoid hidden fees, since parking, Wi-Fi, and other amenities are typically included in the price.

If you decide to experience a local B&B, remember that many require a minimum two-night stay. Most of these accommodations are away from the city center, meaning it's a quieter neighborhood experience that's more embedded in the local community. These properties can be an attractive option, even if your visit is short, since a stay at a B&B could be a great hack to help you travel cheap.
