Zeebrugge - Port
The port of Zeebrugge was constructed between 1895 and 1907 and is protected from the sea by a 2.5km/1.5mile-long mole. In the port containers are loaded and unloaded; regular container traffic exists with Great Britain, North America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. By means of the Pierre-Vandamme lock, passable by ships up to 125,000 tons, the outer harbor basins are linked with the three inland basins and with the Boudewijnkanaal. For some years an extensive building program has been in progress which will increase the area of the harbor considerably so that ships up to 250,000 tons can be handled in the port.
