North York Moors National Park

The North York Moors National Park extends from the beautiful cliff scenery on the coast into a great expanse of country farther inland, an area of mainly moorland and heath, of pines and broom and a variety of wild flowers. One of the few villages in this sparsely-populated region is Goathland, the terminus of the steam railroad operating from Whitby.

Cleveland Way

The Moors are popular with walkers, many of whom follow the Cleveland Way, opened in 1969. This 100mi/160km-long path and bridleway encircles the whole of the national park.

Pickering - Roseberry Topping

Roseberry Topping rises to 320m in the North Yorkshire Moors. The peculiar shape of the hill is due to a geological fault and a mining collapse early in the 20th C. A spur of the Cleveland Way National Trail runs up the summit of Roseberry Topping.

Pickering, England

From Scarborough the A170 turns inland to the Vale of Pickering. The town of Pickering (17mi/27.2km west, population 5,000) has a ruined Norman castle as well as the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, founded during the Norman period. Medieval wall-paintings depicting biblical scenes (mid-15th century) were found above the arcades of the nave in 1852. They were subsequently painted over but uncovered again after 1880.
Pickering Castle, completed in the 12th century, once served as a royal hunting lodge.

Kirkbymoorside

Kirkbymoorside is located near Pickering. At one time several castles stood in Kirkbymoorside, with some ruins still visible today. Some of the stones from one of the castles were used to build the Toll House in the centre of the market place.

Kirkdale Cave

It was in Kirkdale cave where William Buckland identified the bones of a wide variety of exotic species, including such animals as elephants, hyenas and lions. Buckland used these discoveries as evidence for the Biblical narrative of the Great Deluge.

Pickering Castle

Pickering Castle is well-preserved with much of the original walls, towers and keep remaining.

Ryedale Festival

Ryedale Festival takes place from mid-July to early August at various venues.

Helmsley - Nunnington Hall

Returning to Helmsley, take the road which leads via Oswaldkirk, Ampleforth and Byland Abbey to Coxwold (10mi/16km). Nunnington Hall, a large manor house dating from the end of the 16th century, lies on the banks of the River Rye, 3mi/4.8km east of Oswaldkirk. Inside the house can be found fine wooden paneling, valuable tapestries and Chinese porcelain.
Nunnington Hall is managed and maintained by the National Trust. Visitors are welcome to explore the entire house, right into the attics where there is a Carlisle collection of miniature rooms that are fully furnished to reflect different periods.

Ampleforth

At Ampleforth is a well-known public school, founded in 1802 by English Benedictine monks returning from exile in France. Nearby is a fine modern church designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.

Byland Abbey

Of Byland Abey, founded in 1177, only the splendid west front of the church, the south transept and the Cistercian house remain.

Malton, England

Malton (pop. 4,000) is a little market town on the banks of the Derwent. It lies in the center of a large farming area, mainly devoted to corn-growing but also known for the breeding of racehorses. Malton has a mix of architecture such as St Michael's Church, a fine Late Norman building with a perpendicular tower. St Mary's Church, in Old Malton, is all that remains of a Gilbertine priory founded in about 1150.
From Malton follow the A64 for 18mi/29km southwest to return to York city center.

Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum

A very interesting museum, this site was once a POW camp from World War II. It has a number of intact huts that now house tableaux displaying the story of the "People's War" of Great Britain. Three replica aircraft are displayed around the museum.

Flamingo Land Funpark

Flamingo Land offers a wide variety of rides for both the brave and faint-hearted, including the number one steel roller coaster in Britain. It is also the setting for Europe's largest privately owned zoo.

Malton Museum

A cross in Orchard Field marks the site of the Roman station of Derventio. Finds excavated from here can be seen in the Malton Museum in Market Square.

Wharram Percy Deserted Medieval Village

This is a deserted medieval village near Malton. The remains of a church, as well as outlines of foundations and walls, can still be seen.

Coast to Coast Walking Trail

This 190mi/304km trail allows you to see some of the best sites in northern England by foot. The route runs from St Bees in Cumbria, to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Yorkshire Coast, passing through the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks.

Osmotherly - Mount Grace Priory

Mount Grace Priory is an English Heritage property located near Osmotherly. Osmotherly is just inside the boundary of the North York Moors, northeast of Northallerton.
The Priory was established in 1398 and is situated in beautiful woodland. It is one of the finest Carthusian monasteries in England.
