Attractions in Yarmouth include the ruins of a fortress (1538-1547) with a wedge-shaped bastion dating from the reign of Henry VIII, a small town hall, rebuilt in 1763, and St James' Parish Church, with a memorial chapel to Sir Robert Holmes (d. 1692). In 1664 Holmes seized the Dutch possessions in North America, captured New York and became Governor of the Isle of Wight. He had the head of a captured statue of Louis XIV replaced with a sculpture of his own, and had it placed in the chapel for posterity.
An exhibition of paintings of the Isle of Wight and photographs of old Yarmouth have been included in the castle.
