Alcova - Independence Rock State Historic Site Attractions

 
Towering above the Sweetwater River about 53 mi. south-west of Casper is the monolithic Independence Rock on which settlers heading west left their marks for prosperity. A mile further south-west is an impressive natural monument known as Devil's Gate.

Independence Rock State Historic Site near Alcova is a treasure trove of pioneer history. It was here that settlers venturing westward carved their names into the soft rock. Also known as the "register of the desert" the large rock outcropping is situated at 6028 feet above sea level and is more than a mile around.
