Description
Immediately north of the Würzburg Cathedral is the Neumünsterkirche, with a Romanesque east end (11th and 13th C.) and a Baroque west end (1711-19). Under the dome are a figure of the Virgin and a crucifix, both by Riemenschneider. In the west crypt is the sarcophagus of the Irish monk St Kilian, the apostle of the Franks, who was murdered here in 689 along with his companions. In the former cloister (the "Lusamgärtlein") on the north side of the church can be seen a memorial stone commemorating Walther von der Vogelweide, the greatest German medieval poet, who is believed to have died in Würzburg about 1230.
