Description
This site on south Main Street in Winnipeg, near Union Station was where Upper Fort Garry formerly stood, close to the confluence of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers. Only the north gate survives from what was one of the Hudson's Bay Company's foremost trading posts in the Canadian West. Opposite, on the south-east side, stands the modern headquarters of the now almost completely restructured fur trading company.

Upper Fort Garry was originally built in 1835 and expanded in 1853. Repeated flooding by the Red and Assiniboine rivers nearby made this a less than suitable site. Eventually all trade was funnelled through Lower Fort Garry, located near modern day Selkirk. Both Upper and Lower Fort Garry were named after Nicolas Garry, an important director in the Hudson's Bay Company.
