Winnipeg - St Boniface Cathedral

St Boniface Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in western Canada. Founded in 1818 fire caused it to be rebuilt on several occasions since. The façade and parts of the walls survived however and are incorporated in the latest (1970) building. The interior has modern furnishings. The grave of Louis Riel, born in St Boniface, can be seen in the churchyard.

The St Boniface Cathedral is set in a pleasant park setting and the cemetery at the site, Western Canada's oldest Catholic burial ground, has many old gravestones of the first settlers and key figures from days long past. The St Boniface Cathedral was considered Manitoba's best example of French Romanesque architecture and one of Western Canada's most imposing churches.
