Assiniboine, Winnipeg's oldest park, encompasses 150 ha (370 acres) of grass together with superb trees and an English garden.One of the key attractions at Assiniboine Park is the Assiniboine Park Zoo. Home to a wide variety of animals, flora, and fauna, the zoo makes an excellent outing. Other attractions in the park are the 4-8-2 steam locomotive that can be climbed on and in and the world famous Leo Mol sculpture garden. An old footbridge crosses the Assiniboine River on one side of the park and leads to wide lawns, and more importantly, a great ice cream parlour.This is a great place to hang out on summer days or go for a walk.Adjoining Assiniboine Park on its southern side Assiniboine Forest is a large, 280 ha (692 acre) nature reserve. Various wild creatures and plants can be seen and there is an observation area beside the pond for bird watching.

Assiniboine Park Zoo
Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Zoo is one of Canada's best, a collection of 1250 animals belonging to 300 species, many now threatened with extinction. Special emphasis is given to creatures of the northern latitudes (many of which are indigenous to Canada though there are also some rare exotic species such as the European bison, Siberian tiger and North Chinese leopard).The Assiniboine Park Zoo's internationally renowned tropical house is home to hundreds of free-flying birds, monkeys and reptiles. Also of interest are the Monkey House and the Native Bird Building. For children there are young animals at Aunt Sally's Farm.
Leo Mol Sculpture Garden
Located within Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg is the Leo Mol Sculpture Park. Sculptures by this Winnipeg artist are beautifully displayed in a green space mixed amongst trees and ponds. A portion of the sculpture gallery is located inside and information on sculpting is also on display.Leo Mol passed away in 2009.
