Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site Description
A short distance from Fort Buford is the earlier Fort Union (also restored), once an important trading post and fur trappers' base, where George Catlin and John James Audubon studied and painted the landscape and its inhabitants.

Fort Union Trading Post was in use between 1828 and 1867 and accessed by the Assiniboine, Crow, Cree, Ojibway, Blackfeet, and Hidatsa tribes.
