Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a remote sanctuary of deciduous and bamboo forests with swamps, grasslands, paddies and spice plantations that create an interesting patchwork.

Considered the best location for wildlife spotting, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to elephants, bison, deer, leopards, monkeys, wild boar, guar, langur and macaque. The different types of bird species vary greatly throughout the sanctuary, some that have been recorded include peacock, babblers, cuckoos, owl, wood pecker and jungle fowl.

Established in 1973, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected network that is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, whose main objective is to conserve the biological heritage of the region.

Most of the rain falls from June to August while March, April and May are warm and pleasant.

Kalpetta, Sultan Battery and Mananthavadi are three major towns that provide a good base for exploring the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.
