Castle Rock (pop. 2000) is named after a 150 ft high rock that stands in the area but is really best known for its proximity to Mount St Helens. The town is a great base from which to explore the surrounding area, including the Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument and the scenic Spirit Lake Memorial Highway.
The Castle Rock Exhibit Hall and Visitor Center is a great place to start a tour of this area. It describes the effects of Mount St. Helens on the local area and offers information on the day Mount St Helens erupted. There are also other historical displays on the areas history, in the Exhibit Hall.
