Wanganui - Queen's Park

The Queen's Park, laid out on the site of fortifications built by the early settlers, is now in effect the cultural center of the town; within it, side by side, are the Wanganui Museum, the Serjeant Gallery and the War Memorial Hall.

Serjeant Gallery
The Serjeant Gallery (named after a well-to-do local family) occupies a large and imposing building. The collection consists mainly of works by British and New Zealand artists of the 19th and early 20th C, including CF Goldie and the local artist Frances Hodgkins.
Wanganui Museum
The Wanganui Museum has an excellent collection of Maori arts and crafts, including greenstone jewelry and weapons, as well as a 23m long war canoe of 1810, once rowed by 70 men, and a series of portraits of Maori chiefs by the German painter Gottfried Lindauer. There are also mementos of the days of the first settlers and the conflicts with the Maoris.
