A very popular holiday resort is Llangollen (pop. 3,100), in a beautiful setting on both banks of the River Dee. The romantic landscape in this wooded river valley has been impressively captured by William Turner in several paintings.
Plas Newydd is an unusual black and white half timbered home which was once the home of two eccentric ladies. This unique "Gothic" look was established in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
The 19 arches of the 984ft/300m long Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, built by Thomas Telford (1795-1805) on the eastern side of the Llangollen, span the River Dee in spectacular fashion.
