Description
The Kodak Hula Show offers a quick and instructive (but free) introduction to the Hawaii national dance, the hula - there is even an opportunity to join in. The Kodak Hula Show is, even if inevitable changes have to be made during the course of the year, the longest-running show not only in Hawaii but in the whole of the United States of America. It began in 1937 and since then has been presented three or four times a week, apart from a few interruptions due to war.

Accompanied by traditional Hawaiian music, the Hawaiian women dance some of the traditional hula dances, wearing Hawaiian skirts. Tahitian dances are also performed and, during an interval in the hour-long show, the audience is taught the basic steps and movements of the hula dance. To reach a professional level, several years of training are necessary, as offered by the many hula schools (halaus).

To be assured of a good seat, it is advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes before the performance at the venue near the music pavilion. Remember also to take some sort of headwear for protection against the sun.
