Vordingborg Castle Ruins
Of Vordingborg Castle, one of the most important in Denmark, only the curtain walls built by Valdemar IV ("Atterdag") and the Goose Tower (Gåsetårn) near the harbor survive. The copper pointed roof of the 36m/118ft high tower built betwee 1362 and 1365. It is the town's landmark and is crowned by a golden goose - hence its name. The goose is a reminder of the remark made by Valdemar IV that the Hanseatic towns were like a flock of cackling geese. Vordingborg was Valdemar Atterdag's favorite castle.
