Hemmaberg

A road leads 2km/1.25mi west from Globasnitz to the Hemmaberg (841m/2,759ft). In Celtic times there were settlements on the summit, but these were destroyed c. 600. Foundations of early Christian churches have been uncovered and preserved as an open-air museum; they include the local church and a memorial church, two square buildings with a well and baptistry attached, and a burial chapel; the outlines of the mosaic floors are marked out by white marble stones. The settlement was surrounded by a wall, signs of which can be still be seen.
