New Market is a historical town chartered in 1796. New Market played an important role in the US Civil war when a key battle was fought here May 15th, 1864. This battle is re-enacted each year on the same date. New Market has a multitude of historic buildings, so many in fact that the area they are located in is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Endless Caverns near New Market were discovered in 1879. The entire cave has not been explored or mapped as of yet, consequently the cave takes the name "Endless Caverns". Tours last approximately 75 minutes and the air temperature is always cool.

The Hall of Valor presents exhibits on the Civil War with special emphasis on the war in Virginia including the 1864 Battle of New Market.

History buffs will want to visit New Market Battlefield State Historical Park. The park looks at the history of the Civil War as it relates to Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. The park is also a scenic area, perfect for walking or enjoying a picnic.

Learn how Anna Maria Henkel outwitted the Yankees and protected her children or hear stories and music of New Market's citizens from colonial times to World War II.
