The fine city of Lynchburg has a wonderful setting at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The James River flows through town and the city has done a nice job of making the most of its waterfront areas. The city boasts some fine architecture, and a lively arts and cultural scene.
The Old Courthouse in Lynchburg is a Greek Revival style building perched at the top of a seemingly never ending set of stairs. Owned by the Lynchburg Museum, the Courthouse displays antique furniture, clothing, along with changing exhibits on a variety of topics from Virginia's history.

The Maier Museum of Art in Lynchburg has an extensive collection of works by American artists. The museum sometimes loans out portions of its collection for temporary displays at other institutions.
