Hampton Attractions

On a tongue of land between the York and James Rivers is Hampton, founded in 1610 - the oldest British foundation in the United States that has remained continuously occupied. Features of particular interest are the Virginia Air and Space Center (aircraft, Apollo 12 capsule), St John's Church (1728; liturgical vessels of 1618) and Fort Monroe (where Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederation, was confined after the Civil War), with the Casemate Museum, in which the first naval battle between steam-powered armourclads (the Northern "Monitor" and the Southern "Virginia", formerly the "Merrimac"), fought during the Civil War in Hampton Roads, between Hampton and Norfolk, is fully documented.
