The resort island of Chincoteague is accessible by a causeway that links it to the mainland. Made famous by the Chincoteague Ponies, visitors will find a beautiful setting that is well set up to accommodate tourists. Chincoteague is also the gateway to Assateague Ìsland National Shore.
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge takes in shoreline, marshes, wetlands, and forest. The area serves as habitat for a variety of shorebirds, waterfowl, and other wildlife. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is noted for being a World Biosphere Reserve.Many visitors come to see the Chincoteague Ponies, of which there are about 150, divided into two groups by fences.

Tom's Cove Hook Area
The Toms Cove Hook Area in Chincoteague is a 5-mile long beach. Visitors will find sand, surf, and all the joys that come with natural seashores. The area is wonderful for walking and beach combing, and bird life is plentiful.
Oyster and Maritime Museum
For visitors to Chincoteague the Oyster and Maritime Museum is a good place to start a tour. Learn about the history of the island and the oystering industry. On display at the Oyster and Maritime Museum are a number of historical artifacts, a small aquarium and changing exhibits.
NASA Visitor's Center
The NASA Visitor's Center, located just west of Chincoteague, is a great outing for families with lots to entertain adults and children. Visitors can learn about the many aspects of the NASA programs.
