Charles City is ideally located, with several key attractions nearby. Short drives lead to the plantations of Berkely, Sherwood, and Evelynton. Chalres City was established in 1884 and lies between the James and Chickahominy Rivers.
Shirley Plantation
The beautifully restored Shirley Plantation is a wonderful place to visit. Located on the banks of the James River, the Shirley Plantation is 35 miles from Williamsburg and a visit here can be combined with a trip to Colonial Williamsburg. Founded in 1613, the Shirley Plantation is the United States' first plantation and a National Historic Landmark. The home contains many artifacts and an unusual "Flying Staircase". The grounds are immaculately kept and a nice place to wander around.
Berkeley Plantation
The Berkeley Plantation in Charles City is famous for being the site of the first Thanksgiving celebration in 1619. Despite this, the mansion itself was not built until 1726. Perhaps the most impressive part of the Berkeley Plantation are the grounds which stretch on for close to 1,000 acres. Rolling hills, woodlands, pastures, and manicured lawns are all part of the experience.
Sherwood Forest Plantation
The Sherwood Forest Plantation in Charles City is a beautifully restored piece of property once owned by US President John Tyler. The grounds are immaculately maintained and make for a pleasant place to stroll. The home is all decked out in period pieces and the history of the plantation and surrounding areas is explained.The Sherwood Forest Plantation is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Edgewood Plantation
The historic Edgewood Plantation in Charles City features a huge Victorian home that is now a bed and breakfast. The structure has functioned as a church, a post office and a Civil War lookout post, to name just a few of its uses. Visitors are invited to take a tour of the Edgewood Plantation and learn about the homes history.
North Bend Plantation
The North Bend Plantation in Charles City is a restored 19th Century plantation home. Here visitors will find a mansion filled with period pieces and decorated in the style of the times. The home is now a bed and breakfast but the owners still allow self guided tours.
Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation
Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Piney Grove dates to 1790 and is significant as an example of Virginia Log Architecture. The home is furnished with the family heir looms of the Southall's.
Evelynton Plantation (closed)
ATTRACTION IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.Charles City's Evelynton Plantation is a Colonial Revival-style home, furnished in period. The grounds surrounding Evelynton Plantation are also impressive and a pleasant place for walking.
