Quantico, Virginia
Quantico is a place synonymous with the United States Military and more specifically the Marine Corps. The town of Quantico itself is a small place and has a population of only 561 according to the 2000 census. The base contains training facilities for other government agencies including the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) among others. Visitors who have been to Arlington National Cemetery will recognize the replica USMC War Memorial located at the gates to the base.

Chancellorsville, Virginia
Visitors can tour Chancellorsville and learn about the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. The visitors center is a good place to start to get information on the battle and the area. There is a driving tour that leads past some of the most significant sites and walking trails with information provided in an accompanying brochure.
Fairfax, Virginia
Fairfax is a small city with plenty to amuse visitors and is in the process of upgrading it's down town area. The new development called Old Town Village is slated to be a place for shopping, dining and living.While you are in Fairfax stop in at the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum, the National Firearms Museum, or the Fairfax Museum, to learn more about this city.
Fairfax Museum and Visitors Center
The Fairfax Museum & Visitors Center located in the city of the same name has a variety of exhibits and displays related to the history of the local area. The museum is housed in the old elementary school that was built in 1873 and lovingly restored. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
National Firearms Museum
The National Firearms Museum in Fairfax displays a variety of weapons from all periods of American History from the time of colonization, the pioneering era, the Wild West, and the wars, up to present. The Museum's collection is extensive and interesting from a historical perspective.
Fairfax Station Railroad Museum, Fairfax Station
The Fairfax Station Railroad Museum is located in the rebuilt and relocated Fairfax Station railroad depot. The museum presents railroad related artifacts, along with displays on the Civil War and the history of the town and surrounding area.
Lorton, Virginia
Early records indicate that Captain John Smith may have been the first Englishman to venture into the Lorton area. He went up the Potomac River about 1608 where he visited a nearby chieftain's village belonging to the Tauxenent Indians. George Mason IV of Gunston Hall is the most remembered Lorton resident, he wrote what became the American Bill of Rights.
Historic Pohick Church
The Historic Pohick Church is located in Lorton and will be familiar to those interested in the life and times of George Washington. He served as a vestryman here for 23 years. The church is still in active service and visitors to the parish are most welcome. The Pohick Church was built in 1774 and has had an interesting life at one point serving as a stable for Civil War troops.
Gunston Hall Plantation
This brick home was built in 1755 by George Mason - the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights of 1776 and one of the framers of the U.S. Constitution. English and American furnishings from the 18th century and earlier are on display. Formal 18th century gardens located on the grounds can be toured.
Manassas, Virginia
The city of Manassas, located a mere 35 miles from Washington, DC, is an interesting place to visit. The city has done a fine job of restoring its historical buildings and has been awarded "The Great American Main Street" award. The city has a diverse selection of arts and cultural options including contemporary and historical museums and galleries.
Rohr's Store & Museum (closed)
ATTRACTION IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED.Rohr's Store & Museum is a bit of an institution in Manassas. The store has been run by the same family for decades and maintains an old fashioned feel, with a range of goods that you might have seen in bygone days. In the museum portion of Rohr's visitors will find a variety of antique items, adding to the unique atmosphere.
Manassas Museum
The Manassas Museum in the city of the same name had collections based on the surrounding area. On display in the 7000 square foot facility are items showing the history of Manassas including artifacts, photographs, and documents. The museum also has a store selling mementos.
Manassas National Battlefield
The Manassas National Battlefield located near the town of the same name, It was here in 1861 and 1862 that two key battles in the US Civil War were fought. The battlefield has been preserved and is well laid out with many points of interest marked. The Henry Hill Visitor Center is the main educational center in the park and a good place to start a visit.
Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon, Virginia
Mount Vernon located in the town of the same name is not a geological feature but the final home of George Washington. It is here that the great man is buried. The home is done up with period pieces and is furnished in the styles of the time. All manner of memorabilia related to George Washington fills the home. A restaurant and shops are also located on the property.
Spotsylvania, Virginia
The city of Spotsylvania holds much of interest to the casual visitor. Located nearby are Civil War battlefields along with a Civil War Life museum. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Lake Anna State Park offers a variety of pursuits. The city is chock full of good restaurants and has an active arts & culture scene. Sully Historic Site, Chantilly, Virginia
The Sully Historic Site located in Chantilly is the former home of Richard Bland and Elizabeth Collins Lee. The home was built in 1799 and has been restored much to its original appearance. The site also contains several outbuildings including a former slaves quarters.
Culpeper, Virginia

The palatial mansion at Oatlands in Leesburg is a listed National Trust Historic Site and a National Historic Landmark. Morven Park

Theodore Roosevelt Island Park

The Colvin Run Mill Historic Site in Great Falls provides visitors with the experience of a working mill. The groans, rumbles, and shakes can be felt throughout the building as the mill grinds grain. The mill also hosts a variety of educational events throughout the year for young and old. The site consists of four buildings on 36 acres.

Great Falls Park is located 15 miles from Washington, DC. The park contains a stunning sight. Here visitors will see the mighty Potomac River tumble over a series of jagged rocks and ledges as it squeezes through the Patowmack Gorge. Spread over the park's 15,000 acres are 37 mi/ 60 km of hiking trails and 21 mi / 33 km of bicycling trails. Camping is available in cabins and on tent sites. Prince William Forest Park is located within an easy day trip distance from Washington, DC and picnic facilities are numerous. The park also is a magnet for anglers who fish for bluegill, pumpkinseed, large mouth bass, and channel catfish.
National Museum of the Marine Corps
The National Museum of the Marine Corps opened in 2006 in celebration of 231 years of Marin Corps history. The collection highlights more than 60,000 uniforms, weapons, vehicles, medals, and other artifacts from 1775 to present day.
