Description
(Local Name: Augustinerkirche) This triple-naved Church of the Augustinians in Vienna was the scene of great weddings: in 1810 the Archduchess Marie Louise was married here to Napoleon I, who was so short of time that he had to be represented by a proxy, Archduke Karl. In 1854 Emperor Franz Joseph wedded Elisabeth (Sissi) of Bavaria here, and in 1881 the legendary and unfortunate Crown Prince Rudolf married Stefanie of Belgium. The church was built for the Augustinian Canons. Between 1330 and 1339 Dietrich Ladtner von Pirn constructed an aisle-less oblong church in Gothic style. The aisle-less choir was added about 1400, and the tower was built on in 1652. The chapel of St George dates from 1351, and the Loretto Chapel from 1724. The church was refurbished in Baroque style later, but all this was swept away in 1785 when J. F. Hetendorf von Hohenberg carried out a restoration at the behest of Joseph II, bringing back the Gothic style.
