Vienna - Bäckerstrasse
In this street, Vienna's Bächerstrasse, where bakers once lived, visitors will find old mansions and ancient doorways with coats of arms and signs on houses that have been
handed down over the ages. Among the most notable houses are: No. 7 with a courtyard with Renaissance arcading and, on the first floor, a small collection of fine metalwork which the Viennese painter F. Amerling brought together. No. 8 is the former Seilern Palace which was built in 1722 in J. L. von Hildebrandt's style. No. 12 dates from the 15th and 16th C. and has a remarkable Renaissance oriel on its first floor. Once upon a time the house was called "Wo die Kuh am Brett spielt" (Where the cow plays chequers) and was painted all over; No. 14 was built in 1558, and altered in 1700. The Baroque residence at No. 16 was built in 1712 and formerly housed a tavern called the "Schmauswaberl", a much loved eating place for the students of the nearby university as the food was left over from the court kitchens and very cheap.
