Vienna - Albertinaplatz

A monument against war and fascism by the Austrian artist Alfred Hrdlicka dominates Vienna's Albertinaplatz. Erected in 1988-91 it commemorates the victims of the Nazi regime and those killed in the air-raid shelters below Albertinaplatz during the Second World War. The stone "Gateway of Violence" symbolizes the terror of the Nazi dictatorship, the marble Orpheus stands for the doom of war, the bronze sculpture of a Jew scrubbing the pavement is a reminder of March 12 1938 when, following the annexation of Austria by the Nazis, Jewish citizens were forced to scrub off the pro-Austrian slogans painted on the streets.
