In Noordstraat which leads from the market there are several beautiful Renaissance houses, including the house called "Die Nobele Roze" of 1572, one of the oldest hotels in Belgium now occupied by a bank. Opposite a monument commemorates the opening of the IJzer sluices in 1914 by means of which the German advance was stopped.
