Venice - Santa Maria della Salute

This Baroque domed church was built to commemorate the plague which in 1630 claimed over 40,000 victims in Venice alone. Baldassare Longhena began the work in 1631 on foundations of over one million wooden piles. It was not completed until 1687, five years after his death. Longhena's design was only accepted by the Senate because it "would make a grand impression without costing too much".
