Venice - La Giudecca

This island of Giudecca was inhabited by Jews from the Early Middle Ages. They were subsequently moved to Mestre and finally end up in the Ghetto. The island, however, derives its name from the condemned people who were formerly banished here (Lat. indicare = to condemn).

The island is separated from the city by the broad Canal della Giudecca and divided into eight adjacent islands by small canals. Once a haven for Venetian nobles who had their villas here, today it is mostly inhabited by working-class families.

Like the Redentore the Church of the Madonna was also planned by Andrea Palladio. Although simpler and smaller than the Redentore it is still a fine building. It dates from the 16th century but has no works of art of any significance.
