Vernal (pop. 7,900) is the largest city and the county seat of Uintah County, Utah. It is located south of the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area near the Colorado border. Vernal began as a fort built to protect settlers from the Ute Indians.
The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum in Vernal features displays of relics from the settlement of the town and surrounding area and historic information.
The Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery is located 42 mi east of Vernal. The hatchery raises trout for the waters of Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado. There is also a trail that connects the hatchery with the Green River.

Exhibits at the Utah Field House of Natural History emphasize the geology and paleontology of the area, and includes dinosaurs. The museum contains several interactive areas suitable for families, as well as a theatre, and murals. Also featured is a fluorescent mineral room. Visitors can view life-sized replicas of prehistoric animals outside in the museum's dinosaur gardens and stroll along an ancient lakeshore setting inside the museum. The museum also functions as a visitor's information center.
