Uintah County
Uintah County is one of the largest in area of the 29 counties in Utah. It is separated from Carbon County by the Green River. The name comes from the Ute Indians.

Maeser (pop. 2,860) is the second-largest town in Uintah County. It was originally known as Millward and then Buena Vista when it was settled in 1877. The current name comes from the educator Karl Maeser.
Ouray National Wildlife Refuge
The Ouray National Wildlife Refuge is located 30mi/48km southwest of Vernal. It features 12,000 acres of sanctuary for wildlife and was established in 1960. It includes 12mi/19km of the Green River and borders the Uintah and Ouray Indian River Reservation. Among the wildlife are waterfowl, hawks, eagles and deer.

Red Fleet State Park
Red Fleet State Park is located on a reservoir 13mi/21km north of Vernal. A dinosaur trackway from 200 million years ago was recently discovered. The Red Fleet Dam was built in 1980.

Steinaker State Park
The Steinaker State Park is located 7mi/11km north of Vernal in Uintah County. The park has camping, picnic and recreation facilities on the Steinaker Reservoir. There is year-round fishing for rainbow trout and largemouth bass. The Steinaker Dam was built in 1962.
