Oscar Swett Ranch

Northeast of Dutch John is the Oscar Swett Ranch which is listed on the National Historic Register. There are guided tours of this early-20th century homestead. The ranch was home to Oscar Sweet and his family between 1909 and 1967.

Red Canyon Visitor Center

The Red Canyon Visitor Center in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area has exhibits on the natural history of the area, as well as a magnificent view of the canyon from 1,400ft/427m. The gorge is part of the Ashley National Forest.

Sheep Creek Canyon

The Sheep Creek Canyon Geological Area is located a few miles south of Manila in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Sheep Creek is a spawning area for salmon from the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The canyon features spectacular rock formations.

Ute Mountain Fire Lookout Tower

The trail to the Ute Mountain Fire Lookout Tower is an easy hike. This was the first fire tower in Utah and is the last one still in operation.

Flaming Gorge Dam

The Flaming Gorge Dam is located 43mi/69km north of Vernal. It is 502ft/153m high and 1,285ft/392m long. The dam has a visitor center which runs tours and is open year-round.

High Uintas Wilderness

The Uintas are the only American mountain range that runs east-west. Most of the High Uintas Wilderness is located in Ashley National Forest, although some spills over into the Wasatch-Cache.
