Höllengebirge - Feuerkogel
To the west of Ebensee, between the Traunsee and the Attersee, stretches the Höllengebirge, a long straggling range of steep slopes with good skiing on the bald and hilly plateau.
The Höllengebirge, although commonly regarded as part of the Totes Gebirge, does not properly belong to that range. This long narrow plateau stands by itself between the southern ends of the two largest Salzkammergut lakes, the Attersee and the Traunsee. The far ranging views to be had from the summit were one of the main reasons for the construction of the cableway which runs up from Ebensee, on the Traunsee, to the Feuerkogel (1,594m/5,230ft), on the eastern rim of the plateau. From the upper station, where there are a number of houses offering accommodation, the highest peak, the Grosser Höllenkogel (1,862m/6,109ft), can be climbed without difficulty.
