Attersee (lake)

The Attersee is the largest lake in the Salzkammergut and indeed in the Austrian Alps (20km/12.5mi long, 2-3km/0.5mi wide and 171m/560ft deep), extending from the limestone walls of the Höllengebirge (1,862m/6,109ft) in the southeast to the low hills of the Alpine foreland. The Seeache flows into the Attersee in the southwest and the Ager flows out near Kammer. The lake offers facilities for fishing and for water sports of all kinds: surfing, diving, sailing, water skiing, as well as for tennis and mini-golf, riding, hang-gliding and para-gliding (a school in Weyregg on the Attersee). During the summer months local guides conduct walks in the mountains. There is a series of pretty little holiday resorts around the bluish-green waters of the lake - Unterach am Attersee, Nussdorf am Attersee and Attersee village on the west bank: Seewalchen am Attersee and Schörfling together with Kammer at the northern end; Weyregg am Attersee, Steinbach and Weissbach on the east side and Burgau on the southern bank.
