Shimal Attractions

The village of Shimal is located north of Ras al-Khaimah near the Hajar Mountains. Shimal is the site of several hundred pre-Islamic tombs and a settlement dating from 2000 - 1300 BC. Pottery, soft stone vessels, bronze or copper weapons and beads have been uncovered.

The tombs at Shimal are built from stone found locally and they are visible because they protrude above the surface. A large circular tomb from the Umm al-Nar period was excavated at the archeological site of Shimal. The discovery of this tomb makes Shimal one of the most important archeological sites in the United Arab Emirates.

A small hilltop fort, Husn al-Shimal, from the Islamic era is perched on a rock outcropping and offers a good view of the entire area.
