Description
Opposite the Palazzo del Comune in Udine is the Porticato di San Giovanni or Loggia di San Giovanni (1533), a triumphal arch surrounded by arches on slender columns, the entrance of St John's chapel, now a war memorial. Inside there is a victory column by Raimondo d'Aronco. The adjoining clock-tower resembles the one in Venice. On the south side of the Piazza della Libertà is a tall column bearing the lion of St Mark, and on the north side a statue of the Goddess of Peace, commemorating the peace of Campoformio (1797) between France and Austria, in which Venice came under Austrian control. The Palazzo d'Aronco on the Piazza del Libertà is now the Town Hall.
