Description
On the castle hill, north of the Piazza della Libertà in Udine, is the 16th century Castello, which suffered severe damage from an earthquake in 1976, but has since been restored. In the Hall of Honor, in the center of the main building, the members of the parliament of Friuli once met. The Castello now houses the Museo Civico and the Galleria d'Arte Antica. The Art Museum contains pictures and sculpture of the 15th century up to modern times, including pictures by Carpaccio, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Bicci di Lorenzo, Ghirlandaio, Caravaggio and Canova. From the Watch Tower of the castle there are fine views of the Alps.
