Description
70km/43mi northeast of Tzaneen is the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve (area 5,185 ha/12,807 ac), which is bounded on the west by the Letaba River. In contrast to most other nature reserves in South Africa, visitors cannot explore the reserve in their own car. There are organized bus tours, starting from the Eiland Mineral Spa complex, and there are also hiking trails for those who prefer to see the reserve on foot. Among the animals living in the reserve are sable and roan antelopes, zebras, giraffes and kudus. A particular attraction in the reserve is the Tsonga Kraal open-air museum, illustrating the way of life of the Tsonga tribe a hundred years ago.
