El Sumidero

About 22km/14mi north of Tuxtla Gutiérrez the look-out point (mirador) known as Los Chiapas offers a good view down into the highly impressive Cañón (canyon) del Sumidero. The distance from the edge of the ravine down to the river winding along at the bottom, the Río Grijalva (Río Grande de Chiapa), is a good 1000 m (3281 ft). This is where the Chipanecs from Chiapa are supposed to have plunged to their deaths in 1528 in the face of the advancing Spaniards. Dramatic boat trips through the gorge are organised from Chiapa de Corzo.
