Halfeti - Rumkale Attractions

About 36km/22mi north of Birecik, downstream of the district town of Halfeti, an ancient Roman fortress (Rumkale) perches high above the west bank of the Euphrates on a long and steep rocky spur. It can be reached by taking one of the curious old Euphrates ferries. The site once marked the most easterly point of the Roman Empire. Protected by the fortress the town was until 1921 the last surviving Christian community in Mameluke-controlled Islamic northern Syria.
