temple cult and ruins (including remains of a theater, stadium and temple of Apollo from the fifth century B.C.) which today lie partly buried beneath the village.

There was very probably a Greek town here, resettled in Hellenistic times. By the 14th century it was described as virtually uninhabited and falling into disrepair, with four ramparts and surrounded by water. In the 19th century it was said to be a prosperous small town with a mainly Greek population and a castle.
