The first purpose-built resort in the Alps, Sestriere was put on the map when it hosted the World Alpine Championships in 1997. It is part of the Milky Way system which includes Sauze d'Oulx. High with northwest facing slopes, Sestriere draws mainly Italians, so much so that most English-speaking visitors tend to stay in Sauze d'Oulx, which draws a more international crowd and whose ski pass is also valid at Sestriere which has the most extensive and modern snowmaking equipment in Europe.
This area offers some 400 kilometers of marked trails served by 97 lifts. The Sestriere runs are mainly above the treeline while the low-altitude skiing area at Sauze d'Oulx features trails through forested terrain.
