Utica - Excavations

Exploration of the site of Utica began in the early 19th century, and much excavation was carried out between 1948 and 1958. So far, however, only a small part of the site has been brought to light, and most of it - in particular the lower town and Harbor - is still covered by a thick layer of mud and in places, below the water table, by water or marshland. There is a huge Punic cemetery, part of which was later built over. Of the Roman town, much of it built on Punic foundations, little survives after its use for so long as a quarry.
