Enfida Attractions
43km/27mi north of Sousse is Enfida or Enfidaville (pop. 5,000), the market center of a large agricultural area. Before the French occupation the Beys had a large property here which was sold in 1880 to a French private company. The local peasants were forced to leave their land and a huge agricultural estate of over 100,000 hectares/250,000 acres was established on which olives, grain and vegetables were grown, using the most modern methods. When Tunisia became independent the estate was taken over by the government. Market on Sundays. The former church now houses a small museum, with Early Christian mosaics from Uppenna and Sidi Abich (5km/3mi and 3km/2mi north) and Roman and Byzantine pottery.
