Tudela - Cathedral

Tudela's most important building is the Cathedral, built on the site of an earlier mosque in the 12th and 13th centuries, in a style transitional between Romanesque and Gothic. It has an octagonal bell-tower and a smaller tower with a helm roof. Over the west doorway, in its eight archivolts, is a superb Last Judgment, with innumerable figures. The most notable features of the interior are the retablo, painted by Diego Díaz de Oviedo in 1489-94, remains of Romanesque wall paintings, the Romanesque image of Santa María la Blanca, the magnificent choir-stalls and the Capilla de Santa Ana, lavishly decorated in Baroque style.

In the Capilla de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza are the splendid sarcophagi (15th C.) of Francisco Villaespesa, chancellor of Navarre, and his wife Isabel de Ujué. The Romanesque cloister has finely carved capitals.
