Tournai - Musée des Beaux Arts

 
Opposite the town hall stands the star-shaped building of the Musée des Beaux Arts, built in 1928 according to plans by Victor Horta Its principal collection is that of the Tournai burgher Henry van Cutsem. Fine paintings of all epoques are displayed in 14 rooms. Mention must be made of the pictures by the old masters: Roger van der Weyden ("Virgin with Child"), Jan Gossaert ("Saint-Donatien"), the Bruegel family who are represented with various works, as are Jordaens and Rubens.

A whole room is devoted to the Belgian romantic Louis Gallait and another to the Impressionists including Monet, Seurat, and Ensor, with two masterpieces by Manet: "Chez le Père Lathuille" and "Argenteuil". Also of interest are the drawings by van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec.
