Zdar nad Sazavou Attractions

Although the spelling may make the name almost unpronounceable to non-Czech speakers, the sight of the Cistercian Monastery at Zdar nad Sazavou will leave visitors speechless. This beautiful monastery was created in the fertile mind of Giovanni Santini (1677-1723). It is a mixture of Gothic and baroque styles, sometimes intricately intertwined. The present Monastery and Church of St John of Nepomuk was rebuilt in the 17th Century after the original was destroyed in the Hussite wars of the 15th Century.

Nearby in Zdar nad Sazavou is the Church of St John of Neopmuk. This pilgrimage church also saw the hand of Giovanni Santini and is considered to be very unique for its pentagonal and zigzag arcades. Also of note is the museum, located of all places, in the monastery stables.
