Yeovil (pop. 26,400) is a bustling market town, the center of an agricultural area of apple orchards, farmland and ancient villages. The handsome Early Perpendicular St John's Church has an unusual copper lectern and several rather curious bosses (including some carved with African masks from the time of the Crusades).
The Church of St John the Baptist, from the 14th century, has a 92 foot high tower containing two bells from 1728.
A charming country mansion, Montacute House is identified by its strikingly tall, embellished chimneys. The House features an opulently decorated interior and exquisite gardens reflecting Early Jacobean design.
The honey-colored Ham Hill stone adds a pleasant light to this medieval house, contributing to its already substantial architectural beauty in a pleasing fashion.
The picturesque setting is added to by the presence of an adjoining the garden.
