Walcourt is a little place of pilgrimage at the confluence of the Yvres and the Eau d'Heure in the extreme west of the province of Namur. Remains of defense works bear witness to its past as a fortified town.

Barrage de la Plate-Taille
The longest dam in the lake district is the 790m/864yds-long Barrage de la Plate-Taille on the top of which an information center with a 107m/351ft-high viewing tower has been built. The center also contains a large aquarium and a relief model of the district. Technical details of the complex are provided by means of an audio-visual show.

Grand Tour
Every year on Trinity Sunday the "Grand Tour" takes place in Walcourt; this is a procession round the town in honor of the wonder-working statue of Mary. The procession is accompanied by soldiers in Napoleonic uniform together with pipes and drums.

A well-maintained and almost unaltered fortified estate can be found 11km/7mi to the south of Philippeville. It was built in 1554 around a large 13th C. keep. The agricultural buildings date from the 16th to the 19th C.

Thy-le-Château, which lies 8km/5mi north of Walcourt, had a flourishing iron industry in the 13th C. The fine restored castle (10-13th C.) is well worth a visit.
